Susmita is a photographer working across fashion, wildlife, landscape and documentary photography.

Her practice is guided by an instinctive and often experimental way of seeing, drawn to the relationship between people, nature, movement and atmosphere. Her images carry a feeling beyond the frame — quiet, tactile and sometimes slightly unresolved.

Her journey into photography came after having spent quite some years in academia. With a background in Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering, and experience as a researcher at CMC Vellore, she eventually left academia behind to pursue a more intuitive form of expression through photography.

In fashion, Susmita’s work leans towards a minimal, editorial language. She is drawn to form, texture, movement and the space between the subject and its surroundings, allowing an image to develop organically rather than being overly constructed.

Her work with landscapes and wildlife comes from a different kind of looking — slower, quieter and more observant. Nature is not simply a subject within her practice, but an ongoing source of curiosity and connection. She hopes to continue bringing these different worlds together through personal projects and work that can contribute meaningfully to wildlife conservation.

She prefers to work with an open instinct rather than a fixed formula. An idea may begin a photograph, but it is often the unexpected that finishes it.

At the heart of her practice is a simple fascination with looking — and with what can happen when one looks a little longer.
